Grey’s Anatomy – May 3, 2007
I feel cheated. Last night’s Grey’s Anatomy was pretty much a commercial for the new spin off series for the Addison character. For the first hour I felt pretty disappointed. We were subjected to watching Addison’s road trip, as if we cared, to California to meet up with her friends whom we are supposed to care for but since we do not know them, have no time invested in getting to know them and therefore do not care one ounce for them. Interspersed between all this stuff we don’t care about, we have snippets of the real characters. The 2nd hour I was a little more forgiving. Part of the spin off had a little charm – such as the talking elevator which we find out at the end isn’t really a talking elevator but some security person who has a bird’s eye view. I would have rather not found that part out and had Addison have this relationship with the elevator since she so clearly has issues with them. I did like seeing Tim Daly again and Ty Diggs is not too shabby to look at. But they all work for a private “self-help” earthy/hippie/yuppie weird clinic type of place in California, not some hospital where we get to see the nitty gritty type of stories that have made Grey’s so enduring. I can see the California cliches and stereotypes now and it won’t be pretty.Meanwhile, what little we did see of the “real” Grey’s cast included seeing Christina tortured by her mother and soon to be mother-in-laws who want to plan her wedding. This sub-story really has the makings for some really fun dialogue but the scenes were forced and rushed and before you knew it, she had asked Callie (!!!) to be a bridesmaid. Then Meredith’s step-mom comes in to the hospital 3 times, the first with hiccups, the 2nd with some sort of infection so they give her antibiotics and the 3rd with cramps. Each time Meredith has no clue what is wrong and her dad is freaking out and she is calmly saying that things will be fine. Mind you these are short little 2-3 minute segments and it all leads up to step-mom getting sepsis and dying on the operating table. Dad slaps Meredith and she runs off. What the heck?! We could have had our chance for Meredith to open a can of whoop-*ss on her Dad and really tell him all that she’s been bottling up. I mean, she has a new lease on life right? She almost died earlier this season. Step-mom’s health issues were never fully explained and I am still trying to figure out how she can come in with hiccups and by the end of the episode be dead. Had we not had to put up with the Addison crap, the writers could have explained this. Instead, we are now going to be faced with more of Meredith and her parental angst and she’ll be all screwed up some more because she will feel responsible for her step-mom dying. Can’t this girl do anything right? So, in a nutshell, ABC blew it. They teased us with a fleeting moment of passion between Izzie and George and then threw us back into the other show so we could see the some surfer dude without his shirt on and three middle aged women making goo-goo eyes at him. B-O-R-I-N-G! Two episodes remain this season. I hope they don’t waste more time on the new people and get back to the characters we really want to see.
