When did my daughter turn into such a girl?

Of course the logical and truthful answer is that she’s always been one. But anyone who knows ME, knows that I was mostly a tomboy in my youth. I played with dolls, yes. but I also cut off all of my one and only Barbie’s hair and I played a mean game of football. Dare I say it? I was rather good and could give the boys a run for their money. My daughter, on the other hand, can’t catch. She lives for anything Princess related and she’s an avid shopper. The closest thing to being a tomboy was Michaela’s Jack Sparrow costume last Halloween. She made a super cute pirate. I guess pirates aren’t supposed to be cute, huh?Last night we took Michaela shopping for new pants. The poor kid has really started to grow and those size 4T pants are really too small! So, off to JCPenney we went. Of course, every rack was filled with “cute” clothes and OH! The purses! We just gotta get one of those. We found some pants on clearance and an adorable top. I decided that her pant size is just too tricky to guess without trying them on so we went to the dressing room. Inside she wonders out loud – very loud – if anyone else in there knows she’s naked? I calmly try to tell her to speak softer and to just put the pants on. Michaela is not very modest and happily mugged in front the mirror sans pants and shirt. Ends up she’s not a size four – this I knew. But she’s not a five either. Michaela is officially a 5 Slim. So we found a pair in her size and ventured off to Target. Nothing there unless I want my daughter parading around showing more skin than she’s covering. I don’t. Next door to Target is a store called Justice – Just for Girls. I anticipated the prices being high but figured it could be fun to check out. The gasp Michaela let out when we entered the store was clearly audible. Oh! Look at the accessories! Accessories? Michaela is 4 and already knows that being in fashion is all about accessorizing. So, the smallest size this store goes down to is a 6. Shirt wise, it’s ok for Michaela but pant wise, she’ s not ready for that store. Good thing becuase the pants she tried on there were $27! I’m sorry but I can’t fathom spending nearly $30 on a pair of pants that she’ll wear for like two minutes. Luckily there was a Ross a few stores down and I managed to get outta there with a complete outfit (plus new underwear that wasn’t 3 sizes too small!) for like $15.I remember being 4. I liked to buy shoes. I still like shoes but have gotten stingy as I’ve gotten older. I’d like to say I’ve matured but let’s face it…it’s harder to spend your own money on stuff and I can think of more exciting things to spend cash on other than shoes. That’s about as fashionable as I remember getting when I was Michaela’s age. My dad gives me a hard time about shopping for Sunday shoes 30 years ago. He wanted sensible shoes and I wanted the shiney patent leather shoes. I won. I imagine that my fashion “battles” with Michaela are just beginning. She certainly loves the shopping part and fashion shows in the dressing rooms but at least I’ve still got a say in what she wears.
