36 Years Young
Today is Mike’s birthday. With every “happy birthday!” and “hooray! It’s your day!” we give him, he returns with a grunt and an “I’m so old!” Now, since I am facing this same thing in another 16 days, I can hardly argue with his feelings. It does seem like yesterday that I was turning 16. I am in awe that it’s been 2 decades. But, then I think about it some more and realize that 36 isn’t that old. There is still so much life ahead of us if we allow it to happen. These past couple of weeks have been pretty difficult at work and coupled with life’s other challenges, it’s been a trying time. Why want to face more of the same type of crap for another 36 years? I’ll tell you why… It’s the parent-teacher conferences and hearing about how wonderful your child is – it’s the joy in your daughter’s face when you tell her that she’s in on the big birthday secrets and she gets to help plan Dad’s birthday – it’s skipping work to spend the day at the movies with your husband and daughter – it’s having the extended family come over to share in some birthday cake and ice cream. And that’s just today! There are moments like this – typically more of these kind rather than the yucky stuff that we have to endure – that are sprinkled through out our days on this earth that serve to remind us what we’re doing here in the first place. So, bring on my 36th birthday. I’m ready. And as for you, dear husband, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY! IT’S YOUR DAY!!!”
