Harry Connick Jr. on Idol!

Blogs have been few and far between lately. Not much to say, I guess. I’m watching Idol live tonight so I figured I would react to the performances as they happen. First, I am excited to see Harry Connick Jr. on the show! I think he’s super talented and he seems to be pretty stoked about helping the remaining contestants out.First up is Aaron who sings Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon. I actually think this is one of Aaron’s better vocals. I still don’t think he’s strong enough to win this. His voice just doesn’t seem all there. He tends to go flat periodically no matter what genre of music he’s singing. That being said, he did well. The thing is that he’s got 4 others that are super strong in the vocals AND delivery dept and that’s what he’s got to worry about.Casey is up next with Blue Skies… NO GUITAR! And he is looking a little uncomfortable which is kinda good but then again, his voice is sorta shaky. Maybe he needs to turn around so we can see his tight pants… LOL. Sorry. Well, he’s in trouble tonight. Boo! Eek! Kara said he sounded like a lamb… HA HA! I agree. That wasn’t good. Quick, Casey! Take off your shirt! Desperate times, dude…he just bought Aaron a prayer.Crystal sings Summer Wind… Eew. Huge tattoo on her back. Blech. But I digress – it’s about the singing which is good. Her voice is as always, strong and beautiful but the song?? Hmmm… kind of boring. She’ll be ok though.Michael is next with The Way You Look Tonight… LOVE this song and this genre works so well for Michael. He’s wearing the Sinatra hat… hmmm. Well, vocally this was good. I wouldn’t say that I liked his version better than any others I have heard of this song. I don’t. BUT, his was the best and most Sinatra-esque so far tonight.Lee closes the show with That’s Life… LOL…Harry is playing a “Napoleon Dynamite organ” (if you saw the movie, then you know what I mean)…that’s distracting. BUT…Lee is super cool with this performance and he’s certainly gonna be in the top 2. He slayed this and it was great.Oh my gosh…Harry Connick is so funny. He should replace Simon when he leaves.Who’s going home?? It pains me to say it but I think it’s Casey…

Just call her SheGone!

Yay! Thank goodness! Hallelujah! It’s about time! What other cliches can I say? Honestly, Siobhan Magnus WAS entertaining – kinda like roadkill, the curiosity as to what monstrosity she’d wear next and how many windows she’d break with her shrill singing would be enough to keep some folks tuning into this years ever dull American Idol. But like Adam Lambert from last year, while the show they put on may be interesting, would you pay for a full album of that?I don’t think so! And I haven’t thought so all season long. While her voice when not communicating with dogs in the greater Los Angeles area is pleasant, it’s not anything that I’d call super special. Although I admit that when she is singing “normal” she sounds a little like Linda Ronstadt. It was time for her to go.  I was thinking the weirdness factor may have kept her til top 3 but I am glad that most of America has agreed with me (again). Next up – Aaron…. dudes, seriously? He is praised day in and day out. It’s like they know something we don’t know. Is he emotionally unstable to take harsh criticism? He is incapable of NOT singing flat each week. I have no idea what these judges are hearing but what’s coming out of my TV speakers at home is not Idol-worthy. I hate the comparisons to David Archuleta. Simply, there is NO comparison. So, let’s revise the top 3…. looks like it could be shaping up for a Crystal, Lee and Casey top 3 that is if Michael can hang on being the survivor that he is – which is ok because he doesn’t suck. It appears that we’re heading for a Crystal vs. Lee finale and with as disappointing as this season has been there is a glimmer of hope that there is still justice in this world.

Idol Top 7: Inspirational Week

7 @ Yahoo! Video“>I wasn’t going to comment this week because frankly, I am losing interest in Idol this season. I didn’t even watch last night. But I went back and found the performances online this morning. Crystal’s performance was the best. You can watch it here:

Who will go home? Well, who cares? I think it’s time for Tim to go… next will be Aaron followed by Michael or Casey. The top 3 is shaping up to be Crystal, Lee and Siobhan. I’d be satisfied with a Lee or Crystal win as I like them both.Is it me or have the last 2 seasons of Idol been kind of a bore? There just hasn’t been a contestant to be excited about since David vs David.

Idols: Elvis Week

01-simon-cowell-2016518.jpg
It’s Elvis Week on Idol and this week’s mentor is Adam Lambert. Eh… um… OKAAAY… I guess it’s to give tips on showmanship?  I don’t really know why he’s there otherwise. He didn’t win Idol and he hasn’t sold gazillions of albums or play massive stadiums. He talked big though as if he knew what he was talking about and I suppose he gave some good advice but then again some of the stuff he told the idols to do they didn’t do and I thought that was awesome.
As a whole, I really thought this week was boring. Nothing sucked that bad but there wasn’t anything that was THAT great either. The run down is as follows:
Crystal Bowersox – Saved – What can be said? It was Crystal. It was solid. It was soulful. It was good.
Andrew Garcia – Hound Dog – Andrew’s in serious danger this week which sucks. I am still really rooting for him but he slowed down this song and it wasn’t all that great. I think he sang it fine but the song itself was dull and when I think of this classic Elvis tune, that is not the description I’d give it.
Tim Urban – Can’t Help Falling In Love – Tim did awesome! He’s gonna live to see another week and I think it’s kinda funny!
Lee Dewyze – A Little Less Conversation – This was my favorite performance of the night. Lee has consistently grown on me week by week. He’s cool and I like ‘im!
Aaron Kelly – Blue Suede Shoes – I think this was Aaron’s best performance yet. It sounded better than any of the others he’s given but there’s just something about him. I just don’t see it happening for him.
Siobhan Magnus – Suspicious Minds – Blech. I didn’t like this and that stinks because I really like this song but not how she sang it was was kinda like Cybil performing it. It was just weird. If I had to pick a bottom 3, I’d put her in it this week.
Michael Lynche – In The Ghetto – Way good rendition of this song which isn’t a song I particularly like. He changed it up just enough and it was very nice.
Katie Stevens – Baby What You Want Me To Do - Eh… Okay, so this was probably one of the better Katie performances but definitely not as good as last week. It was just OK.
Casey James – Lawdy, Miss Clawdy – Me wuvs Casey. And he was totally in his element with this song. I can kinda understand why the judges said is the same ol’ same ol’ with him but that’s who he is. At least he isn’t all over the place like Siobhan.
Bottom 3: Andrew, Siobhan and Aaron – if I were to pick it based on this week’s performances. Probable Bottom 3: Katy, Aaron and Andrew.
Going home? Andrew and Aaron.

How did the Top 9 Didgeridoo?

01-simon-cowell-2016518.jpgFirst off, last night’s Idol didn’t suck. There really wasn’t one performance that was cringe worthy. I found the whole thing enjoyable…but…it wasn’t perfect.Aaron Kelly – Long and Winding Road – This was Aaron’s weakest performance to date. I am not really feeling the love for Aaron although a part of me thinks I should root for the guy because he’s from my husband’s neck of the woods. But it’s just not there for me. I don’t really care for his voice most of the time and last night just fell flat. There were lots of bum notes and the song would never end. It was not horrible but it wasn’t great. Easily forgettable. I’m predicting a bottom 3 for tonight. Katie Stevens – Let It Be – This was Katie’s BEST performance to date. The vocals were so good. I liked everything about it. She deserves to stay this week and hopefully avoid the bottom 3 because she was that good. The thing is…she’s been in it 2 weeks in a row. Can she avoid it this week? Andrew Garcia – Can’t Buy Me Love – Poor Andrew was kinda beat up again by the judges. I don’t know why. It was a solid performance. I like his voice. I like him. He looks like the heat miser from The Year Without a Santa Claus and who doesn’t like that guy? The thing is that the song was Can’t Buy Me Love..it’s a happy peppy song that he changed up a bit which showcased his artist skillz but it just wasn’t a wow vocal which I suppose was the point of the night. In terms of THAT, I think Andrew may be looking at a bottom 3 visit this week – unfortunately. Michael Lynche – Eleanor Rigby – I was not a fan of this performance. It was just weird. I didn’t think it sounded that good and it was kinda dramatic and gospely or something. It was just alright. And like Andrew, he could face a bottom 3 visit. Crystal Bowersox – Come Together – Crystal is just great. She can even make the Didgeridoo cool. Simon thought having that instrument was distracting and perhaps in person it was. But on TV, they didn’t show the guy playing it THAT much. So as a viewer I wasn’t really put off by it. This was a solid performance. Tim Urban – All My Loving – I am confused as to why the producers would ask this guy back if all they intended was for him to be a punching bag for the judges. There were lots of other really good singers to choose from but why him? The only thing I can think of is that he’s good looking and kinda has that Sanjaya innocence about him that makes for an interesting show. People freak out as to why he’s still there. He’s fodder for the blogs and certain websites that aim to undermine the Idol voting but whatever…last night he sang a song that fit his voice. He sang it well. He was in key. And he was pretty good. Will he hit bottom 3? Probably. But judging on that performance alone, he may just stick around another week. Casey James – Jealous Guy – Whoa. This was good. People are underestimating Casey…could be his good looks but whatever. He hit it spot on with the vocals last night and it was the best performance of the night! Siobhan Magnus – Across the Universe – I think that my daughter should critique these performances. I asked her this morning about the show and who she liked best. She said Lee’s was WEIRD. And she said that Siobhan had a nice background (she was diggin’ the disco ball effect) and she was dressed all sorts of crazy. Michaela thinks that if Siobhan were to be in a fashion contest she would totally lose. What a funny kid. Anyway, Siobhan tried the understated approach this week and although she gave a pleasant sounding vocal, the performance was a snoozefest. Seriously. It was boring. I kept waiting for a big moment but it never happened. Lee Dewyze – Hey Jude – Lee wins the WTH award for the night. As if the Didgeridoo wasn’t enough, Lee had to one-up Crystal by introducing the bagpipes complete with a player in full Scottish dress and it was so out of place. It was so random and weird, I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry. Lee single-handedly let the air out of his big ol’ balloon that he blew up last week with his fabulous performance. Had it not been for this, he would have ranked right up there with Casey, Katy and Crystal for the night. That was out there…Who’s going home? I suppose I should phrase it as to who SHOULD go home….based on last night’s performances I would say Aaron as his was the weakest. Based on a whole, probably Tim because how much more of this farce can we take? That being said….usually these guys who turn into the season’s clowns last until about top 7 or 6. He could be with us a wee bit longer. Bottom 3 will probably be Aaron, Tim and Andrew. Aaron goes home.

Idol Top 10 Bring It…and some lose it….

Last night the Idol Top 10 performed with Usher as the mentor. I wasn’t all that enthused about Usher – don’t really know his music, etc. But I was impressed with him as a mentor. He seemed to really teach the performers about PERFORMING and that is important. You can sound good but if you don’t look good singing it, what’s the point? I think a lot of the performers stepped it up last night and used the advice they were given to their advantage. It was overall, a good night.Aaron Kelly – Ain’t No Sunshine - I am not on the Team Aaron Train… sorry, folks. This was just not up to par with others of the night. It seems like Aaron just has some work to do. He sounds better when he’s singing for the mentors but get him on the stage it it sounds shaky…and dare I say it, kinda pitchy…Crystal Bowersox – Midnight Train to GeorgiaThis was nice. Crystal is just a power unto herself. She showed a tender vulnerable side with her performance which was so different than what she usually shows. But I agree with Simon when he told her to not forget who she is and to not change into something she’s not.Lee Dewyze – Treat Her Like A Lady - Me likey, Lee! This performance was outstanding and the song – the way he sang it – would be one that I would buy. Great job!Katie Stevens – Chain of Fools - Meh. I guess vocally, she did ok but this song was too weird. She should have sung something else. I am not into Katie…Andrew Garcia – Forever - AWESOME! This was so good. Not a Chris Brown fan…for a variety of reasons, people but this song was really cool and I loved the acoustic guitar and beat box. Way good and his little smile in the middle of the song…kinda felt like he either knew something we didn’t know or he just thought the lyrics were stupid. I dunno. It was really good. WTG, Andrew! Tim Urban – Sweet Love - This performance was wooden and down right creepy. Nevermind that it was sung “ok”…Ellen was right to compare him to a bedroom stalker. Just weird!!Didi Benami – What Becomes of a Brokenhearted ’nuff said.. Michael Lynche – Ready for Love - Very nice….dramatic and beautiful….but kinda boring. *shrug* He’s cool, though. Casey James – Hold On I’m Coming - Was it just me or did Casey seem to smile throughout this whole song? He was having loads of fun performing this and was totally in his element. It was kinda hot! Siobhan Magnus – Through the Fire - The only thing I liked about her performance was her boots. This was seriously a train wreck…all over the place vocally, screaming (AGAIN!) and it was just super kinds of awful. Luckily for her, Didi was worse.Who’s going home? Either Didi or Tim….
