Inauguration

I hadn’t planned on watching the inauguration. The build up and hype was wearing pretty thin. But then I happened upon Mom watching TV this morning and it was just as all the dignitaries were walking in and things were about to begin. The thought did occur to me that although I wasn’t thrilled with the outcome of the election, today is a historic day no matter who was taking the oath of office and well, being the political junky that I can be sometimes, I wanted to check it out. As the former presidents paraded to the stand I felt wistful as I watched President Bush. I mentioned to Mom that I felt like the last person in America who liked the guy. I am not sad to see his administration end. I am actually relieved that the hate talk may subside. 8 years of animosity is a lot for a regular person to take let alone a president who by the weight of his obligations and responsibilities has much to be stressed about. To be in politics one must have thick skin which is why I will never be president. Still, I feel sorrow for President Bush because from day 1 he was never given a chance. The arrows were slung before the last recount was made. He was treated unfairly from the beginning and never garnered the respect that anyone who is called President should have. I may not agree with Obama’s politics and I may pick on him from time to time. But he is our president now. Therefore a certain amount of respect is owed. It won’t, however, keep me from drawing dreads on him in my Obama calendar. I do have my limits! That being said, though, the ceremony was good. His speech was well crafted and delivered. It will be remembered as a huge moment in American history and rightfully so. As I sat there listening, I was trying to reconcile just what my problem has been this past week leading up to this moment and I would have to say that the overblown coverage and worship has vexed me most. Obama has had music rewritten for him (Solid As A Rock has now been released as Solid as Barack). His swearing in ceremony will have a soundtrack (music arranged by John Williams and performed by nearly every popular classical musicians). As the camera panned the sea of people assembled on the Mall, there were signs and hats and tshirts and people waving their fingers at the cameras screaming “We’re number 1!!” Who? Americans? Or the Democrats? Black people? Who? It was odd. It wasn’t humble or serious at all. There is a solemnity that comes with this moment. To President Obama’s credit, he was adequately solemn. He didn’t perpetuate the weirdness of the events that have been going on the past few days – at least that I could tell. But there is a frenzy that has been brewing for a while now regarding this man. Lest we all forget – he is JUST a man. He is one man. For those who have been so quick to blame President Bush for every failing in America, how quickly will they defend this one man for similar failings? Will they chalk it up to inexperience? Will they give him a pass because as a black man, who are we to criticize? Who is to say. I don’t know what lies ahead. I hope he can prove us all wrong. And I hope he means what he said today in that he’ll honor the sacrifices of those who died for our freedoms and helped pave the way to his presidency. I hope he keeps our laws in tact and doesn’t distort them for his own gain. I hope he is a good president and I wish him well. And I still think he needs to grow dreads….

In for a rockier four years

My lack of posting lately I contribute to a couple things…(1) I’ve actually been kinda busy(2) I’ve been struck without words over the blatent stupidity of most people.Let me explain..you may sense where this is going because if you are familiar with my rants, I cannot speak of dumb people without bringing politics into the subject. So I will start with a couple of dumb people…namely the women on The View.On the surface, they may seem to know where and what they speak of. The likes of Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Bahar have a talent for biting rhetoric and wit (well, maybe not Barbara Walters…I wouldn’t call her witty). These people seem to feel strongly about the state of the world and believe that the answer to all of our problems lie within the brain that sits between the vulcan ears of man we will likely soon call President Obama. Whoopi has said some pretty idiotic stuff lately - asking John McCain if she should worry about slavery if he becomes president. That ranks right up there with Matt Damon wondering if Sarah Palin thinks dinosaurs roamed the earth 4000 years ago. It’s looney. It’s I can’t believe that just fell out their face STUPID!Fox News is reporting a new feud among the View’s women and it’s of course, between Elizabeth Hasselbeck and Joy Bahar. I give props for Hasselbeck sticking with her day job because you’ve gotta have a backbone of titanium to hang out with the other hosts of that show. She is the only conservative in the group of 5 women – far outnumbered and should the Fairness Doctrine really come back, we’ll have to start a campaign to insist that they throw Bahar out on her butt and bring in Ann Coulter to even things up a little. In watching the bantering back and forth between Bahar and anyone who disagrees with her, my assessment is this… she is a bitter hag who can dish it but not take it. There must be some deep rooted angst her her past or some sort of trauma that gets her to behave the way that she does. Because saying what she says and how she says it doesn’t make her smart. It just makes her mean. She’s precisely the type of person that I would counsel my daughter to stay away from. Because it’s true what they say, with friends like that, who needs enemies? So the beat of the liberal drum seems to be getting louder. We have a week left until D-Day and I am eager for it to be over. I am not looking forward to the upcoming administration for a variety of reasons but mainly because I can see the liberties we have in this great country slipping away. My reaction isn’t unique. I am not the only one saying these things but it’s not resonating. There is a whole population out there who believes they’re entitled – that they deserve something for nothing. And I can guarantee that they will get NOTHING. Spreading the wealth doesn’t mean that Barack Obama will be Robin Hood. He’s not going to take from the rich and GIVE it to the poor. No. He intends to rob the successful and those he deems not worthy of their bounty and bring them down to a level that equals the have nots. And guess what, the have nots will STILL be without! He promote ideas and policies that in the name of justice and equality will put the management of our lives in the hands of the government and eliminate our free will. So, what is one to do? The people on TV say we’re going to elect this guy. Many of us realize what’s at stake and feel powerless to stop it. The key is to not fall prey to their promises. It’s called minding our P’s and Q’s because the day will come that someone will have to pick up the pieces and it will be the people who can remember how to do it on their own that will be called upon to do it. Geez…it’s been a rough year already…I’m not looking forward to the next four…

O-Barf-ma

So, I can understand that if someone agrees with what Obama stands for and believes in that they’d want to vote for him. I get that. But what I don’t get is how it’s ok for the Obama people to go to places like Ohio (where they have early voting going on right now) and hold rallies to “get out the vote” and register people and THEN walk these newly registered voters to the polls and tell them to vote for Obama. How is that legal? Okay, go register these folks..I don’t see the big deal in that but I do have a problem with people like Cuba Gooding Jr. personally walking hundreds of ill-knowing folk over to the polls and practically marking their ballots for them. In Ohio there is also a law that allows people to use a temporary mailing address like a homeless shelter. It will allow for a person to use an address at a shelter in one county and then that person can go to another shelter in another county and register and vote again. So, technically one person can go vote in every stinking county in Ohio. Tell me how that is ok! If the roles were reversed and the other side was actively doing this, there would be hell to pay. And it’s perplexing to me because everyone and their aunt is saying that Obama is going to win. If that’s so, then why do they have to cheat to make that happen? Why do they have to bribe poor unsuspecting homeless people with free bus fare or a warm meal for a vote for Obama? Why do they have to hold free hip hop concerts with Jay-Z and brushes with “greatness” with the likes of ol’ Cuba Gooding so they young folk will mark Obama on their ballots? Do they not have enough faith in their guy? It’s truely disgusting. I’ve had a stomach ache over it most of the day. It’s the same type of feeling you get when you know someone “just isn’t right” and you’d do yourself a favor by staying really far away for fear their ugliness is contagious. Go ahead and elect your guy…gloomier days are surely ahead of us. It’d serve America best for some to be prepared to help pick up the pieces of our Constitution which will surely lay in tatters once Obama gets his grimey hands on it. Until then, I’ll keep a wary eye out…

Obama: The One

I have to really wonder what it is that has got people in such a tizzy over Barack Obama. Their devotion is almost as scary as he is. These people know virtually nothing about the man yet they are so willing to blindly follow him. I am not a McCain supporter by any stretch of the imagination but one thing I will never do is vote for this person who claims to be the source of America’s salvation. When I think of other moments in history where people have been led astray by someone claiming to be something they’re not, only disaster follows. Hitler had people in a tizzy too.  I have to ask these Obama supporters what it is about this person that will allow them to put their faith in him? Say what you will about previous democratic candidates (Kerry, Bill Clinton, Edwards, etc), they at least had some experience behind them when they sought the highest office. He’s one scary dude, folks. And he really thinks a lot of himself. Check out this great ad:
