Last spring, Michaela’s hamster Henry died. We have no idea how old Henry was when we got him but we were told that he had been at the pet store “a while” and in hamster years, that could mean he was pretty old. So, when he died, we had only had him a year. We warned Michaela when we got him that hamsters didn’t live long and she assured us that she was ok with this. But when his time finally came, Michaela just melted in my arms in tears. One would surmise that perhaps she was mourning her little hamster but in reality, she was mourning the loss of having a pet of her very own. Sure, we have two dogs and a cat but they’ve been around lots longer than her and they are more like siblings than pets. All she wanted was something of her own. And my telling her that a replacement Henry wasn’t going to happen was NOT what she wanted to hear. I had been reluctant to get Henry in the first place but at the time Mike and Michaela ganged up on me assuring me that it’d be fun. And just as I predicted, I was the one who would feed Henry and I was the one who cleaned his cage each week. I just had to put my foot down. But I do have a soft spot for pets and of course Michaela usually gets what Michaela wants. This time I convinced her that instead of her very own hamster she could have her very own fish. So, off to the pet store we went. In no time, we had purchased a 1.5 gallon acrylic tank complete with a Little Mermaid figurine. Michaela picked out three fish which she promptly named Max, Mickey and ZeeBee. ZeeBee quickly proved himself to be a total pig and within a day he had eaten himself to death. Mickey lasted a little longer but about a month later, we found him half way up the intake valve on the filter. This left Max who to this day has managed to live in a green tank with a non-working filter and three weekend feeders we threw into the tank in JUNE when we left for Hawaii that have never dissolved. I am convinced that this fish is either toxic or once I move him to cleaner water, he’ll disintegrate right before my eyes.Well, new water he will be in tomorrow. Tonight Michaela has gone to her cousins house to play and cause all sorts of rowdy trouble for my brother and his wife. And while she is away, I have managed to replace her inadequate 1.5 gallon tank with a slightly more reasonable 5 gallon tank. The rocks are new. The plants are new. The Little Mermaid has been transferred over and the newest addition is a Littlest Pet Shop figurine. I’ll move Max over in the morning once the tank has had time to acclimate to whatever it’s supposed to acclimate to. And then the waiting begins… so long as none of the cousins reads this blog, Michaela will have no idea what awaits her when she gets home. And I am not going to tell her. I just want to see how long it takes before she notices. And cousins be warned…IF you read this, don’t ruin the surprise, ok?
