Realty, Schmealty

American Idol…I don’t watch that much reality TV. I usually just limit it to American Idol. It has been my guilty pleasure pretty much since the beginning of the show and one that I enjoyed as a family with Mike when he was living. After he died, Michaela and I continued the tradition by watching it weekly with my sister and Mom. We have a lot of fun doing that. But that all may change after this season when Simon Cowell leaves and is possibly replaced by this disgusting person pig creature thing – aka Howard Stern. Word is that Fox is courting him to replace Cowell and reportedly Stern confirmed the talks on his radio show. Let’s just say it now… YUCK. What business Stern have judging musical talent? I have just as much knowledge as he does and quite frankly as a member of the listening public, I think I have just as much of a right to Cowell’s job as he does. It would serve Fox better if they would just open it up to us arm chair judges. Why not make it a yearly competition on who will sit in the judges seat? Fans could record themselves giving critiques. Other fans could vote on it? I dunno. But it’s bound to be better than this yahoo. He couldn’t be a bigger scum bucket and if it’s Fox’s intention to drive away more fans, then they are succeeding with this one.The Bachelor…I don’t watch this show or the Bachelorette too often. Usually I end up on an episode or two each season because there is usually nothing else on TV and I am not quite ready to go to bed yet. I have watched a couple episodes of this show this season. Last night there were 4 girls left – the baby talking insecure Gia, the whiny Ali, the much hated Vienna and the been stabbed in the heart because she’s divorced Tenly. I groan just thinking of these girls and how it could even be possible for Jake to be in love in one way or another with each and every one. Seriously?? I mean, he hasn’t figured out by now which one he’s favoring? All that tells me is that he’s using something other than his heart and mind to make his decision. And it’s obvious because he’s majorly making out with each and every one of them. That makes for good TV? There is just something so yucky about the whole thing. I watched the hometown visits and how the families got to meet Jake and the questions they asked and I imagined if that were my family. I could honestly say that I don’t think my family would participate in such fake crap. Jake deserves what he gets if he thinks these little girls are in any way representative of real women. This show sucks. That was 2 hours I’ll never get back… Curse you, ABC!!except for Grey’s Anatomy and General Hospital because those are awesome… :-D

Simon Cowell leaving Idol?

So word is that this next season of Idol will be Simon’s last so he can concentrate on bringing the British hit television show X Factor to the states. Like all we need is another talent/reality show… I dunno. I guess that’s fine and all but I don’t think the American version will be as good as the British one anyway. What makes the British version so good are the guys who are the show’s “Ryan Seacrests” and Simon is way nicer on that show. I was cool with Paula leaving Idol but with Simon gone, it really won’t be the same. He’s the only one on there that gives any kind of real criticism that matters. Sure Fox will try to find a suitable replacement but we all know how that usually turns out. If he’s to go after this season, then let this be the last one for everyone. We can find something else to do with our Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Saving American Idol

There is an article on NYPost.com about the producers “Rethinking ‘Idol’”. Apparently the ratings have been slipping this year and in an effort to stave off any more decline, they want to make some changes to the show to try to keep viewers engaged. I’ve been thinking about this and although I have enjoyed this season a lot – namely because so many in the family are into it this year – there are a few things that the show can do to make it a little better for us the viewers. The first thing that comes to mind is that I’d like to hear more from Simon. It irritates me that the show will let Randy and Paula drone on and on and then by the time it gets to Simon, he’s got so little time left to comment. And when he does, he is constantly berated by the other judges and Ryan Seacrest. What Simon has to say usually means more because most of the time what he has to say is relevant and honest. I don’t agree with him 100% of the time but I think it’s a little self-serving of someone like Seacrest to banter on like that. Ryan Seacrest is a good host but he’s not the show and shouldn’t be so much of a focus. I’d rather hear more from the judges than him.Another thing the show can do is show us more of those who make the cut. It’d be easier to understand why someone like Jar-Jar Binks, er, Jason Castro made it to the top 12 if we could see his journey there. When he was introduced to the top 24, it was like, who is that guy?Maybe another twist on the selection process would be to allow the public to choose the final 24. Why should the 3 judges decide who is destined for AI and who isn’t? I’m not sure what a logistical nightmare it could be but it’s at least worth a look see.So, the ratings are sinking but there really shouldn’t be anything the producers at AI should worry about. They’re still way ahead of other shows.
